Healthcare construction activities are recognized worldwide as a patient risk factor for hospital-acquired infections. Risks during construction are managed by the ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) process recommended by the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and the American Institute of Architects. The more difficult question arises when the project is completed: is the building clean and the building systems operating as designed? Health care facility systems are typically "commissioned" from an engineering standpoint, but infection control perspectives are overlooked.

- Building HVAC system fundamentals (air filtration, air exchanges, and pressure relationships).
- Epidemiology of aspergillosis and ecology of Aspergillus mold species.
- Infection control commissioning principles and practices (visual inspection, building and room pressure relationships, particle counting, and air sampling).
- Air sampling techniques and their limitations: Culturable (impactor, culture plate, and filter methods) and non-culturable fungal sampling (spore counting and polyermase chain reaction methods); and the importance of low reporting limits.
