In 2006 the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) established the set of quality standards such suppliers must meet as conditions of participation

Among various requirements the law stipulates that providers of DMEPOS (durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies -- such as wheelchairs and oxygen delivery systems, for example) must meet new quality standards in order to bill the Medicare Part B program.

Later that year, CMS announced the list of organizations that are now authorized to accredit such healthcare organizations as meeting the standards. One such organization is The Joint Commission (JCAHO).
