More than $60 million in HIPAA fines and penalties have been imposed since the act was created. In 2015, almost 120,000,000 individuals were affected by HIPAA data breaches. This has led to a substantial increase in HIPAA enforcement resulting in much higher fines and penalties.

The U.S. Congress has inquired about recent and very sizeable increases in cyber-attacks that inflect the risk of medical identity theft and asked HHS for increased HIPAA enforcement. And with the Phase 2 Audit completed, more attention will be placed on settlements once the results are announced.
