Instructor Profile:

Dr. Kenneth S. Weinberg, B.A., M.Sc. Ph.D. is an independent consultant who, prior to entering independent practice, worked as the Director of Safety in a large teaching hospital in the Boston Area. Both as a consultant and as a safety director, he has dealt with the issues related to exposures in the workplace to blood borne pathogens. He has also trained workers on the hazards of exposure to these potentially infectious materials, and how to protect themselves from such exposures. He has also advised employers and workers on the selection and proper use of personal protective equipment in these circumstances. In addition, Dr. Weinberg has written several books on the topic of safety and dealing with OSHA.

Topic Background:

Exposure to blood borne pathogens has long been recognized as a potential hazard, not merely to health care workers, but to others who deal with the public, as well. Teachers, clerks, those involved in manufacturing, police, and firefighters to name a few have potential for exposure. In addition, even if your job does not involve health care or health care related work, you need to know how to protect yourself from exposure to blood borne pathogens and what the potential risks of exposure may be. Some workers may also have responsibility for cleaning up locations where employees or others were cut, lacerated or injured. These personnel should have the basic knowledge of how to properly clean such locations while protecting themselves from exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
